Visual colour assessment is an essential process in industries such as textiles, paint, cosmetics, printing and food production. Although technological tools such as spectrophotometers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, human perception remains an indispensable part of colour assessment. The role of an observer, that is, a person who visually assesses colours, is crucial to ensuring consistency and quality. This article discusses the knowledge, skills, characteristics and standards required to become a professional observer, supported by scientific literature and international standards.


Knowledge of Colour and Light

An observer must have a thorough knowledge of colour theory and the physics of light. According to the Standard Guide for Selection, Evaluation, and Training of Observers (ASTM E1499), understanding colour models such as CIE LAB and RGB is essential. These models describe how colours are built up and how they interact with one another. The CIE LAB model is particularly important in professional colour assessment because it is based on how humans perceive colour. The model divides colour into three dimensions: lightness, the green–red axis and the blue–yellow axis. This makes it possible to quantify and compare colours precisely.

In addition, knowledge of light sources and their influence on colour perception is essential. Light sources such as D65 (daylight) and TL84 (shop lighting) can strongly influence the perception of colour. The Standard Practice for Visual Appraisal of Colors and Color Differences (ASTM D1729) emphasises that standardised light is a crucial factor in visual colour assessment. Observers must understand how different lighting conditions can alter the perception of colour and how these effects can be minimised.


Skills for Accurate Assessment

In addition to knowledge, an observer must possess specific skills. One of the most important skills is sharp colour vision. This means an observer must be able to perceive subtle differences between colours. The Standard Guide for Designing and Conducting Visual Experiments (ASTM E1808) describes how visual experiments can be designed to test and improve the skills of observers. The document emphasises the importance of consistent and standardised test conditions to ensure reliable results.
