What is Colour Harmony?

Colour harmony refers to the aesthetic balance between colours that together create a visually pleasing experience. It is a subjective experience influenced by various factors, such as:

Although colour harmony is often seen as a subjective experience, this research attempts to quantify and understand the phenomenon using scientific methods.


The Research: Colour Interval and Area Balance

The research focused on two important aspects of colour harmony: colour interval and area balance. The main findings are discussed below.

  1. Colour Interval and Colour Harmony
    The research introduced a non-directional scale to examine the relationship between colour interval and colour harmony.     • The results confirm earlier theories on colour harmony, but offer a more quantitative approach.
  2. Area Balance and Colour Harmony
    Area balance refers to the ratio of the surface areas of different colours in a composition. This concept was introduced earlier by Munsell and further developed in this research. Although the results of this part of the research are still under development, it suggests that a balanced distribution of colour areas has a positive influence on perceived harmony.
