Isaac Newton: The Beginning of Modern Colour Theory

Isaac Newton, the English physicist and mathematician, is widely regarded as the founder of modern colour theory. In 1666, Newton carried out a series of experiments in which he passed white light through a glass prism. He discovered that the light split into a spectrum of colours—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. This phenomenon, which he called “dispersion”, proved that white light is not homogeneous but consists of different colours that become visible when refracted through a prism.

Newton's findings were revolutionary because they refuted the then-prevailing view that colour was a property of objects themselves. Instead, Newton proposed that colour is a property of light, determined by its specific wavelength. This insight laid the foundation for modern optics and led to the development of the concept of the colour spectrum. Newton's work also showed that colours can be recombined to form white light, a crucial step in understanding the nature of light and colour.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: The Psychology of Colour

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the German writer and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe responded to Newton's physical approach with his own, more phenomenological and psychological approach to colour. Goethe believed that Newton's theory, while scientifically correct, failed to sufficiently account for the subjective human experience of colour. In his work “Zur Farbenlehre” (1810), Goethe introduced an alternative colour theory that focused on how colours are perceived and how they can evoke psychological and emotional effects.

Goethe's colour circle comprised six primary colours—red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet—and emphasised the relationships between complementary colours. He also studied phenomena such as afterimages, in which a complementary colour is perceived after looking at a particular colour, and simultaneous contrast, in which the perception of a colour is influenced by the surrounding colours. Goethe's work had a profound influence on artists and designers, who applied his ideas to bring emotional and psychological depth to their work.
