Additive Colour Mixing

Additive colour mixing occurs when different colours of light are combined. This type of mixing is what happens with digital screens such as televisions, computers and phones. The primary colours in additive mixing are red, green and blue (RGB). When these colours are combined in different proportions, they can create a wide range of other colours.

  • Example in practice: In digital screens, such as those of your TV or computer, red, green and blue light are combined to create all the colours you see. When red and green light are projected together, yellow light is produced. When all three primary colours (red, green and blue) are combined, this results in white light.
