Introduction

Colour plays a central role in the automotive industry. It affects not only the appeal and brand identity of a vehicle, but also the overall perception of quality and innovation. In the pursuit of precision and aesthetic elegance within this industry, recent research, published in “Color Research and Application”, has yielded new insights into the methodologies for assessing colour differences in automotive coatings. This work is of particular importance to colour professionals striving to refine colour measurement processes so that they better align with human perception.

The Rise of Goniochromatic Pigments

Goniochromatic pigments, such as metallic and pearlescent pigments, have gained enormous popularity in recent years. Especially in the automotive industry, where they help attract consumers by creating unique visual effects. These pigments change appearance depending on the angle of incidence of light and viewing angle, resulting in a dynamic display and a deeper aesthetic appreciation. However, evaluating and controlling these complex colour changes poses a challenge, both for manufacturers and colour scientists.

Measurements with Multi-Angle Spectrophotometers

A key focus of the research was the use of multi-angle spectrophotometers such as the BYK-mac. These advanced devices measure colours from various angles, which is essential for understanding and predicting the shifting colour effects caused by goniochromatic pigments. The use of the AUDI2000 colour difference formula is of great importance here. This formula was specifically developed to account for angle-dependent colour changes, which is essential for providing accurate and relevant measurement results.
