Hering's Colour Theory

Ewald Hering, a German physiologist and psychologist, introduced an alternative theory of colour vision in the late 19th century that laid the foundation for the understanding of opponent processes in colour perception. Hering's work was a response to the limitations of the then-prevailing trichromatic theory of colour vision, developed by Thomas Young and Hermann von Helmholtz. His theories remain relevant today and are often compared with other colour theories, such as those of Newton, Goethe and Itten.

Core Concepts of Hering's Theory

Hering proposed that colour vision is governed by three opponent processes, each with two opposing colour pairs:

  1. Red-Green Process: This opponent process means that red and green cannot be perceived simultaneously; an object can be red or green, but not both at the same time.
  2. Blue-Yellow Process: This process operates in the same way as the red-green process, with blue and yellow mutually exclusive.
  3. Black-White Process: This process governs the perception of brightness, with black and white acting as opponents.
