History and Early Developments
In 1931, an important milestone occurred when the CIE introduced a standardised system for colour measurement. Although theoretically refined, the practical instruments needed to apply these standards efficiently on a broader scale were lacking at the time. Initially, only a few specialised research institutions, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, were able to make substantial progress in developing early colour measurement instruments such as the Hardy-General Electric Recording Spectrophotometer (Patterson, 1984, p.1).
Advances in Colour Measurement Technology
The distinction between absorption spectrophotometry and reflectance spectrophotometry marks important technological advances in the way colour is measured in different materials. The former, applied to transparent materials, made use of the Lambert and Beer laws, known as early as 1852. Thanks to innovations after the Second World War, researchers were able to benefit from improved photodetectors to carry out accurate measurements (Patterson, 1984, p.1).
