Colour Design and Brain Diseases

Introduction

Diseases that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), have profound consequences for patients' cognitive and motor functions. These conditions often lead to memory loss, cognitive impairment, motor problems and behavioural changes. Colour design can play an important role in improving the living environment of these patients by promoting their wellbeing and alleviating symptoms. This article explores how colour design can be applied in the care of patients with brain disorders, focusing on the psychological and physiological effects of colour.

Influence of Colour on Cognitive Functions

• Memory and Recognition: Colours can help improve memory and the recognition of objects and environments. Research has shown that specific colours, such as red and yellow, are retained in memory better than other colours such as blue and green【Kuhbandner et al., 2014, page 11】.
• Colour and Cognitive Impairment: Cognitive decline, such as that occurring in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, can affect the perception and interpretation of colours.
